WHAT A RIDE!

Finally....Wow. What a ride that was. The path to get Juliet from our brain to your eyes has been a far crazier and more rewarding one than I could ever have imagined. We sent off the final issue to the Printer's this Friday -- almost a full year after the first pages were drawn. If you had told me it was going to take us a YEAR to get four issues done -- I would have laughed in your face. No WAY. The book was totally written by November, this thing was going to go off without a hitch. The very first page.... oh, so many months ago.Ha. What was that they say about "best laid plans....?"Somehow, in-between that first page and last Friday, there's been numerous family illnesses, two floods, one team member who had to leave, a busted up car, more trips to Cons than I can count, and 100 pages (And counting - don't worry, we have a bad-ass back-up story for the trade) of the best work we've done on Kill Shakespeare so far.I want to thank Corin Howell, our incredible inker and penciler who had to juggle the family illness, the busted up car and one of the floods alongside the on-going work she's been doing for BOOM! and IDW AND the incredible stuff she's done for us. Corin, you're ability to nail all the biggest emotional moments, the beautiful backgrounds you've littered the book with, and your good nature and amazing laugh have made this journey a pleasure. KS will ALWAYS miss Andy Belanger, but you've proven to be more than worthy of being his successor.Juliet_1_Inks_8Alex Lillie and Shari Chankahamma -- what a tag team. We'd worked with Shari before on Tide and Mask, and so I was SO excited when we got her back for Juliet, and then SO devastated when we lost her half-way through to a dream opportunity that she HAD to say yes too.A classic Shari C. scene Into the void stepped Alex. You can't possibly believe this, but this is ALEX'S  FIRST MAJOR COLOURING JOB IN COMICS!!! To be thrown into a series that has the depth of mythology as KS, and halfway into a book, is incredibly hard, yet Alex was amazing. I think you'll agree that hers was an incredible rookie season.WHO is this talented woman? I also have to thank Simon David and Adam Gorham, our exceptional cover-artists. Simon did work for us on Tide of Blood (the iconic Skull, and, perhaps my fave of all time, the bloody Prospero emerging from a book), and being able to hand him all four covers was a dream. He churned out four more brilliant covers -- including what be my NEW favourite, his chilling take on Issue #4...Simon's pitch-perfect take on the dark end to our tale.Adam is also SORT of new to the KS family. Those with keen eyes will have spotted his work here and there before, but this was the first time we could get him for a full run, and he did not disappoint. His issue #1 cover is one of the best things I think he's ever done. It kills me that we can only have one cover for the trade... because there is so much good stuff in here.I love this Adam Gorham cover so much, it hurts.Toby Malone has a credit you don't see a ton in comics -- Story Editor, but he was invaluable in shaping the tale. His knowledge of Shakespeare is peerless, and there is more than one reference to the Bard that originated in his nimble brain. He also constantly had me thinking about how to best deliver the story concisely and with maximum emotion. He's a real talent - and any writer would do well to work with him.I also HAVE to thank the team at IDW -- Tom Waltz our fearless editor, who helped keep us on track story-wise, and was there when I was freaking out when we lost Shari, Corin had to go to be by her Father's side, and the roof of my house threatened to collapse.  When I found out we weren't getting Chris Mowry, the letterer for the first four KS volumes, I'll admit, I was nervous. Shawn Lee took those nerves, made them a cup of tea, and tucked'em in with a good book. Shawn's lettering is instinctive, insightful, and never ever obscures the artist's work. That's the true mark of a great letterer -- knowing that the "image is the thing." Shawn, I'm a believer.Shawn handles a mass of text with aplombLast, but not least, I need to thank my partner in crime - Anthony Del Col. We started committing Bardicde way back in 2008, and now almost a decade later we're still going strong (or at least WE think so). I'm so grateful that Anthony was willing to give me a chance to take KS in this direction. It would have been easy for him to have felt threatened, or wanted to control things, but that's not the kind of guy he is. All he cares about is good story, and once we figured out what THIS ONE was, he supported me whole-heartedly (The "Cassio" twist is a direct result of Anthony challenging me to take the story to a better place.)Thanks Anthony. I'm blessed to get to tell stories with you.How can you say no to this face?Actually, the REAL last but not list are you, the readers. When we first dreamed-up Kill Shakespeare we had no idea if we could find an audience or not, and then you came into our lives. We're on the seventh printing of Volume 1, we've been able to take our little baby from the page to the stage, to the board (game), and now to TV. Without you folks reading, commenting, challenging us, we would never have come even half this far. I hope you find Juliet an excellent addition to the canon. At the end of the day we're here to serve you.IMG_20170405_181959411 IMG_20170405_164931700 Lots of love,Conor

Sneak Peek at NEW PAGES!

As some of you have seen, Kill Shakespeare is coming back to the page. We're working on our fifth book, "Juliet" which is going to take a step back from the main story to show you how Juliet started on the path towards becoming Prodigal leader. Set just a a few months after the end of Romeo and Juliet, we pick up our heroine as an angry young woman, who still feels guilt over Romeo's death, and isn't sure that she deserved to have survived.  A horrific murder will give Juliet a cause, bloody vengeance, and pit her against one of Shakespeare's nastiest villains, Cornwall from King Lear. Can Juliet get revenge? And will she lose herself in the process?Unfortunately for us, the uber-talented Andy Belanger can't join us this time out, so instead we have tapped the ALSO uber-talented Corin Howell! She's best known for her work with BOOM! (Power Rangers), Viz Media (Bravest Warriors), Oni (The Mighty Zodiac) and IDW (Transformers), and now we've got her doing pencils and inks for our baby!Vaneda Vireak, whose work featured in the back-up story for The Mask Of Night is on-board to colour the book and we could not be happier with their work.Ah heck, why don't we stop gushing and SHOW you?Below are some pencils from the first chapter of the series - we'd love to hear your thoughts on this new comic-adventure!Juliet_1_Pencils_2Juliet_1_Pencils_3Juliet_1_Pencils_5 Juliet_1_Pencils_7

Heading to Edmonton this weekend!

The organizers of the Calgary Comic & Entertainment Expo last year launched a sister convention in Edmonton and apparently it went quite well.  When I took part in the Calgary show this past spring I heard nothing but great things about it (and it seemed like half of our customers at the show were from Edmonton) so we decided to attend the Edmonton Comic & Entertainment Expo this upcoming weekend.I'll be heading to Edmonton on Friday (hello Aunt Elizabeth, Aunt Adeline and Uncle J.D.!) and be at the show both full days - Sat, Sept 28 and Sun, Sept 29.  I'm looking forward to the event - there are some great guests like Richard Starkings, Francis Manapul, Boo Cook, Adrian Alphona and others.I will be at Table X01 all weekend so swing by and say hello, bring a copy of one of our books to be signed, or pick one up!

Conor's Con Pix Galore! (And an ANDY B. retrospective: "A Man and his Beard")

The past few weeks have been a pretty busy time for the K.S. boys. You've seen Anthony jet off to exotic far-flung locales like... Ottawa and... Calgary...But while Anthony was enjoying the high-life, poor lil' ol me has been stuck doing AMAZING SHOWS in Chicago and right here in Toronto -- TCAF 2013.I've been quite the shutterbug as I learn to play with this new Galaxy Tablet and I even took a bit of video of the Kill Shakespeare stage show that played at C2E2. I wanted to share some memories of the events and thank all the amazing fans and friends who came out and supported us in both places. I had SUCH a good time talking with all of you. We've said it before, but I don't believe that any other book has such diverse and interesting fans as K.S. does! Now let's see some photos!Below are a few from the stageplay that went on at C2E2 and was put on by the amazing Strawdog Theatre. I've already posted a few on our Facebook account, but these are a few samples that I took of the show. The rest you can find in this album.

Of course C2E2 was more than just theatre -- we also had fans and cosplay galore. To get a flavour of the delightful madness here are a few shots to whet your appetite. You can see more of C2E2 in this album.

This past weekend was TCAF -- a more "refined" comics experience. While cos-play isn't really a "thing" at TCAF it was a great chance to see old friends and to steal a ukeleFor more TCAF click here. And finally, for those of you who haven't seen Andy B. for awhile you may not know that he now owns the 1,965th best beard of ALL-TIME. He just passed this guy and is closing hard on these guys.Andy graciously agreed to pose for a series of photos so we can commerate a time when life was simpler, and all that mattered was a man, his beard, and how many birds could nest within it.

For the entire, surely to be award-winning, collection - click here... if you dare!

HAPPY 10th BIRTHDAY, TCAF!

Like many 10 year-olds the Toronto Comic Arts Festival is really precocious.   The show has taken on the personality of its founders Chris and Peter from The Beguiling and has come to represent the best place to go to see the edges of comics culture. If you're the sort of person who says they don't read comics, or likely, given that you're reading this post, you're the kind of person who KNOWS someone who says they don't read comics THIS is the show to attend. At TCAF you'll see stories about EVERYTHING under the sun. This year the show will debut a quirky food driven bio (Relish: My Life in the Kitchen), an all-ages book written by Gilbert Hernandez, one half of the amazing team behind Love & Rockets (Marble Season), a comic totally devoid of dialogue (Silent Worlds), a story about facing death at the hands of Cancer (When David Lost His Voice), a love-story set in the World War 1 era Croatia (Black Paths) and a story told from a German Shepherd's perspective (uh, I 'm A German Shepherd). And of course their is plenty of the genre stuff you know and love with Sci-fi, Crime, horror and even superhero stories galore! It's also an  amazing show because we get sleep in our own beds (yay!).So come out this weekend to TCAF and say hello to Conor at his sentry position at the entrance of the RAID room AKA Learning Centre 2.The show starts at 9 AM on Saturday and runs until 5pm (another reason they love them -- ample time for dinner!) and on Sunday the hours are from 11-5.

Conor on stage with Neil Gaiman (Video)

As mentioned last weekend I had an amazing time out in Orlando where I got to be part of the International Association for the Fantastic Arts' annual conference. One of the real treats was getting to be IN a play with Neil Gaiman. The play was called "The Sum of Your Experience" and the lovely dirtectrix, Carrie J. Cole, sent me a link to a video of the show.Bill Clementine, a noble IAFA member, shot the video and edited it for this clip and the narration is provided by Brett Cox.(And if you don't know which one is me and which one is Mr. Gaiman? I'm the handsome one - GRIN)We did this after just one hour of rehearsal - so I think it's pretty amazing we didn't screw up too many lines (I combined two lines once but Neil covered like a champ -- see if you can spot my screw-up).Enjoy!

WAY MORE AWESOME: TIME OUT CHICAGO PREVIEWS THE KILL SHAKESPEARE DRAMATIC READING

One of the most exciting and, for me, nerve-wracking projects for Kill Shakespeare in 2013 is the on-going roll-out of the stageshow. It's exciting because the stageshow allows us to reach an entirely different audience and get new people interested in stepping into the Kill Shakespeare world. It's nerve-wracking though for that same reason: new people means new opportunities for misunderstanding the "point" of Kill Shakespeare. We're here to praise the Bard, not to bury him, as those who've attended a convention with us have probably heard us say, but not everyone gets that.Moving to the stage is also a bit intimidating because theatre audiences can have a reputation for… well, let’s put ths kindly, bone-shattering snobbery. And theatre critics? Oh, man they can be the WORST: with a glass of chardonnay in one hand, a wheel of  camembert in the other, and cheekbones that could cut glass, they scare the hell out of me by just SAYING the name Brecht.Add to all THAT, the reality that in about a week the most ambitious undertaking of the dramatic reading EVER attempted is hitting the stage in Chicago, and you can tell why my already poor sleep habits might take a further nose dive.Imagine my relief when Anderson Lawfer, the head-cheese over at Strawdog Theatre, the folks who are going to put Kill Shakespeare on stage for an unprecedented THREE WEEK run, called me to tell me that Time Out Chicago wanted to do an article on the show. It seems like those arbitrers of all that is cool in the Windy City think Kill Shakespeare fits the bill. And indeed they have, and they seem quite excited about the whole thing. Kill Shakespeare: The Dramtic Reading will hit the boards on March 4th and goes until the 26th in Strawdog's cabaret space (the warm-and-fuzzily named Hugen Hall - grab tickets here).Aside from talking up the show, Time Out goes in-depth aboutAnderson and the rest of the Strawdog team and their penchant for staging some of the most interesting and innovative theatre in the city.I certainly hope that fans of ours in and around Chicago will be able to attend the show -- from what Anderson tells us it is going to be an experience unlike anything else that you have seen. And if Ms. Snooty-critic with the killer cheekbones and the gluten-free diet doesn't like it? Well fine... I'll sleep soundly regardless.(plus, I'd just show her this)Conor

Chicago production begins prep for March performance!

We will post more information next month but the Chicago (and Midwest) debut of our Live Stage Reading will take place in March.  Playing for three weeks, the production is being produced by Chicago's acclaimed Strawdog Theatre and we're excited to hear about the progress of the production.  Director Anderson Lawfer has been sending us earlier concepts and designs for the production and it will be taking our story to a whole new level, in terms of set design, music and performances. Here are a few photos taken from the first read-through of the script with the actors.

We'll keep you updated on the progress of the production over the next little while - it should be a great one!

Happy Global Entrepreneurship Week!

This week is Global Entrepreneurship Week and I'm quite happy to take a moment to highlight a couple organizations and people that have helped us out over the last four-plus years to make Kill Shakespeare a reality. As an entrepreneur it's incredibly important to receive assistance from people along the way and none of what we've created would be possible without everyone that have lended a helping hand.

We've had a lot of highs over the last few years, and a couple lows, but overall it has been a great experience that I wouldn't have traded for the world.  It's so great that we have been able to inspire others as well, and I really enjoy teaching entrepreneurship in the many classes and workshops that we host around North America. This past Thursday I sat on a panel hosted by the Canadian Youth Business Foundation, which was the first organization to provide us funding back when all of this was just an idea and notion.  In addition to funding they've provided us with some great mentorship, networking opportunities and resources (board room, baby!) and our chief contact, Sarah Hashem, has been a treat to work with.

In addition, our CYBF mentor, Josh Howard, this week is receiving the Queen's Diamond Jubilee Medal of Distinction for the work he's done with us and other start-up companies.  Congrats, Josh!

Snail Trail!

Last weekend, on Saturday August 18th, Toronto's oldest comic shop - The Silver Snail - moved house.Sorta.The Snail has been on the cusp of moving for several months as their old digs on 367 Queen West has been sold to be developed as condos (surprise, surprise). But because of slower than expected rennovations at their new home-to-be at 329 Yonge (in Yonge and Dundas Square) the store hasn't been able to move. But that didn't stop the Snail's new owners Mark and George from organizing a very coolevent that saw hundred of volunteers line up, side by side, from the old locale to the new one. Then this human chain moved over a 100 boxes and props from the old store to Yonge and Dundas square.Sure, there wasn't anyplace to PUT these boxes as the workers were still hammering and sawing away BUT that didn't matter because the boxes were actually filled with goodies that were then raffled off to all the helpers. The whole thing was covered by several media outlets giving our comic-friends some great buzz as they prepare to expand the Snail's legacy.Yours truly got to be a marshall, which basically means I had to carry boxes across intersections... 'cause if a volunteer gets run over that's a tragedy, if a red-head gets whacked that's a Louie CK bit.Hope you're all enjoying the Expo! See you in a couple of hours.Conor

Congrats to Conor and Crystal!

This past weekend was a really busy one for us.  No, it wasn't another convention or a weekend full of writing and artwork, working towards a deadline...It was the wedding weekend for Conor McCreery! On Saturday Conor married the love of his life, Crystal Luxmore. It was a great service and then an absolutely fun reception held at a circus school in eastern Toronto.  Everyone that attended had a blast, including the key members of the KS team.Crystal has been along for the entire Kill Shakespeare ride since the beginning so she's been a great foundation and rock of support for Conor - and the project - during that time.  I'm incredibly happy for the both of them and honoured to have attended the event.

The photos here were taken by Michelle Graham of Imagine My Photo, a good friend of Conor's from university. Thanks for providing these for us for our website!
